Who doesn’t remember seeing one of those old hammocks suspended between two trees, where dad or even grandpa would spend their leisure time?  While the classic rope hammock is still popular throughout the world, hammocks have evolved quite a bit since the original models.  Hammocks have been used as beds or places of relaxation for hundreds of years.  When we think of hammocks in the distant past, often images of pirates or naval ships come to mind with several rows of slumbering sailors.  Hammocks have been around for centuries however, as one of the most rudimentary forms of bedding.  From their original rope and fabric models, hammock chairs, indoor hammocks, and portable hammocks were developed over time.  In our modern age, fabric hammocks suspended with a hammock stand are commonplace in several cultures.

Despite their simple design, hammocks still provide an excellent way to relax and enjoy one’s surroundings.  Though the materials used to make hammocks have evolved, their design still retains the classic comfort of the original models.

In fact, during his first voyage, in 1492, Christopher Columbus recorded that many American Indians slept in “hamacas” or nets made of cotton. Columbus’ was the first person to bring the knowledge of hammocks to Europe and South America, and since that time hammocks have become popular throughout the world.

Today hammocks come is almost every color, style and variety imaginable. There are rope hammocks, hammock chairs and hammock accessories. Many people choose to place their hammocks on their front porches or in their yards. While others prefer to enjoy the comfort of a hammock in their own home.
