The next time you’re about to venture out into the woods for an extended trek, the first thing you’ll want to do is pack your backpack. This will give you an idea of exactly how much weight you’ll have to carry over the length of your trip. And if the pack seems too heavy to haul for the entirety of your adventure, it’s best to know this beforehand. You can either wear the pack with you while you take extended walks around your neighborhood in order to acclimate yourself to the weight, or you can pack in the smartest, lightest way possible.

The bulkiest and heaviest items that most campers take with them on treks are usually the sleeping bag, tent, and food. For this reason, make sure you have a feather light sleeping bag that can be condensed into a very small stuff bag. On the food front, take as many dehydrated meals as possible. They are extremely light and not overly bulky. Also consider throwing in a bag of rice. This will provide the base for many, many meals, and it won’t take up too much room. And for the biggest weight saving impact, switch out your tent for a travel hammock. These hammocks are light, compact, and they even reduce your impact on the environment.
